About Optical Eye Lusions | Independent Opticians in Hall Green Birmingham

The practice has a long-established presence on Robin Hood Island, originally founded in 1973 by Michael Spencer and Richard Canin as Spencer and Canin Opticians. From the very beginning, it built a strong reputation for providing high-quality eye examinations and eyewear to patients across the local community and surrounding areas.

Following Richard’s retirement, Michael continued the practice under the name Michael Spencer Optometrists in 1994. After dedicating more than 30 years to caring for patients and growing the practice, Michael retired in 2003, completing the sale to Bimal Panchal.

Following a complete refurbishment, the practice was rebranded as Optical eye Lusions in 2004. Since then, it has continued to evolve — offering not only eyewear and comprehensive eye examinations, but also detailed consultations focused on long-term eye health using the latest optical technology and equipment.

Through ongoing professional development and advanced clinical qualifications, Bimal has significantly expanded the scope of services available. Today, Optical eye Lusions is a recognised Diabetic Eye Screening Centre and a provider of Community Urgent Eyecare Services (CUES) with Independent Prescribing.

This allows us to assess, diagnose, and treat a wide range of eye conditions with the same prescribing authority as a GP or hospital eye specialist. We are proud to be the only opticians in the local area offering this enhanced level of clinical care — giving patients faster access to specialist treatment and advice closer to home.

In addition, we provide pre- and post-operative cataract care and accept referrals for advanced and complex contact lens cases from other opticians, clinics, and hospital eye departments.

As the practice has evolved and our clinical services have expanded, we felt it was the right time to refresh the identity that had represented us for over 22 years.

We are proud to introduce ourselves as Medical Opticians & Contact Lens Specialists — a title that reflects both our advanced clinical expertise and our long-standing reputation in specialist contact lens care.
